Advanced Optometric equipments
Our practice is equipped with the latest optometry technology to deliver precise and thorough eye examinations. From advanced diagnostics to early detection of eye conditions, we ensure accurate results and personalised care.
✔️ Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT): Captures high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the retina to diagnose and monitor conditions like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and diabetic retinopathy.
✔️ Fundus Photography Camera: Takes detailed images of the retina, optic nerve, and blood vessels to detect and document eye diseases such as diabetes-related eye issues and retinal detachments.
✔️ Blephasteam (Thea v2): Provides warm, moist compression therapy to relieve dry eye symptoms and meibomian gland dysfunction by unblocking oil glands in the eyelids.
✔️ Optometric Slit Lamp: A microscope with a bright light used to examine the front and back structures of the eye, including the cornea, iris, lens, and retina, for abnormalities or injuries.
✔️ Auto Kerato-Refracto-Tonometer: Measures corneal curvature (keratometry), refractive error (autorefraction), and intraocular pressure (tonometry) for comprehensive eye assessments.
✔️ iCare Tonometer (the 'air puff machine' alternative!): Measures intraocular pressure (IOP), crucial for diagnosing and monitoring conditions like glaucoma.
Why is it important to have an eye test?
• Regular eye tests can identify serious eye diseases like glaucoma, macular degeneration, and cataracts early, which are common among Australians and can prevent vision loss if treated promptly.
• Eye tests can detect signs of systemic health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol. • Queensland has high levels of UV radiation (being close to the equator), increasing the risk of sun-related eye damage. Eye tests help monitor and manage conditions like pterygium or cataracts caused by UV exposure. • Eye tests ensures your glasses or contact lens prescriptions are up-to-date, reducing eye strains and headaches.

✔️ Visual Field Machine: Tests peripheral vision to detect vision loss caused by conditions like glaucoma, strokes, or neurological disorders.
✔️ Foreign Body Removal Tools: Safely removes debris or foreign objects from the eye to prevent infection or damage to the cornea.
✔️ Trichiasis Removal Tools: Corrects misdirected eyelashes that grow inward toward the eye, preventing irritation and corneal damage.
✔️ Lacrimal Dilator: Gently dilates the tear ducts to diagnose and treat blockages or narrow passages, helping to manage conditions like excessive tearing or dry eye syndrome.
✔️ Autorefractor: Provides an objective measurement of refractive error (e.g. nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism) to determine the correct prescription for glasses or contact lenses.
✔️ Binocular Indirect Ophthalmoscope: Allows a wide-field view of the retina to diagnose retinal detachments, tears, or other abnormalities, often used during dilated eye exams.
Myopia Control
At our practice, we focus on paediatric myopia (nearsightedness), offering tailored eye tests and evidence-based treatments to slow its progression. Early intervention is key to protecting your child’s vision and long-term eye health. Myopia is a growing global concern and left untreated can increase the risk of serious eye conditions later in life, such as retinal detachment, glaucoma, and macular degeneration.
Early intervention is key
• Early Detection: Myopia often develops in childhood and early detection allows for timely intervention to slow its progression.
• Academic Performance: Clear vision is essential for learning. Untreated myopia can lead to difficulties in reading, writing, and focusing in school.
• Preventing Complications: High myopia increases the risk of sight-threatening conditions like retinal detachment and glaucoma later in life.
• Lifestyle Impact: Myopia can affect a child’s ability to participate in sports and other activities, impacting their confidence and development.

• Lifestyle Impact: Myopia can affect a child’s ability to participate in sports and other activities, impacting their confidence and development.
A Systematic review and meta-analysis by Holden et al. (2016) predict that nearly 50% of the world’s population will be myopic by 2050!
Types of Treatments
💧 Atropine Eye Drops: A gentle, daily treatment used to slow down the progression of your child’s nearsightedness (myopia). They work by relaxing the eye’s focusing mechanism, which helps to reduce the elongation of the eyeball—a key factor in myopia progression—while being safe and easy to use.
- Reduces myopia progression by 30-60% with minimal side effects (Yam et al., 2019).
- It’s a simple, non-invasive option that fits easily into a child’s daily routine.
- Research indicates that low-dose atropine is safe for long-term use and can be combined with other treatments for enhanced results.
🧿 Soft Contact Lenses: Specially designed daily or reusable lenses that help slow down the progression of nearsightedness. They work by gently reshaping how light focuses on the retina, reducing eye strain and helping to prevent your child’s vision from getting worse over time.
- Effective in slowing myopia progression by 25-50% (Walline et al., 2020).
- Dual benefit in that they provide clear vision whilst actively working to control myopia development.
👓 Myopia Control Glasses: Eyewear that helps slow down the progression of myopia. They use advanced lens technology to reduce eye strain and focus light correctly, providing clear vision whilst actively slowly down the growth of the eye.
- A great non-invasive option for children who are not ready for contact lenses
- Studies show up to 60% reduction in progression (Lam et al., 2019).
- They are comfortable and easy to adapt to for daily wear.
- These glasses are designed to provide clear central vision while simultaneously reducing peripheral defocus, a key factor in myopia progression,
- 🌄 Lifestyle and Environmental Modifications: Encouraging outdoor play (at least 2 hours per day) and reducing screen time/near work helps reduce the risk of myopia progression.
- Outdoor activities have been shown to slow myopia progression by up to 30% (Xiong et al., 2017).
- It’s a natural and cost-effective way to support your child’s eye health.
- Exposure to natural light and focusing on distant objects during outdoor play are thought to be key factors in slowing myopia development.
Myopia in children can make it difficult to see the board clearly, potentially impacting their focus, academic performance, and confidence in school.
